Our Programs
The Women’s Rights Advocacy Program- This program seeks to educate women in local communities and relevant stakeholders on women’s economic and social rights. It helps generate a better understanding of the link between women’s health and economic status and their economic and social rights. It also works to establish CEADER Liaison Committees in target slum communities. The committees are made up of women in the slum communities who are constantly sensitized, equipped and mobilized to carry out CEADER’s mandate within their communities.
The Evaluation and Monitoring Program- seeks to monitor and evaluate local women’s economic and health status- and government’s compliance to local and international laws on social and economic rights in it designs and implementation of poverty reduction programs. It also evaluates these programs and recommends affirmative actions to combat gender gaps on how men and women experience poverty.
The International Partnership Program- facilitates the organization’s collaborations with international partners. The program works with groups outside Nigeria to advance women’s economic and social rights within and outside Nigeria and channels these efforts to bringing international spotlight to the plight of women in slum communities in Nigeria.
Some of Our Activities
In 2010 CEADER implemented a project that sought to expand counseling to include sexuality and reproductive rights education in a Catholic Church. Under this project, CEADER organized two Focus Group Discussions for selected young girls in Umunkwo village in Imo state. Information gathered from the young girls during the FGDs was included in a training of female counselors of Umunkwo Catholic Church, who provide counseling on sexual and reproductive issues to young girls in the church and village. The project sought to ensure that the trained women incorporate a human rights perspective to the counseling sessions in order to advance and protect sexual and reproductive rights of young girls in the village. The training and the FGDs also raised awareness on cultural practices that limit girls from attaining their reproductive rights such as female genital mutilation, child marriage, male child preference, etc. and encouraged the counselors to include messages denouncing these practices in their education activities within the community.
Skills Acquisition Program for Commercial Sex Workers
CEADER is currently facilitating a Skills Acquisition Training for commercial sex workers in Ijora Badia in order to provide an alternative source of income for sex workers who desire to develop skills for a more lasting source of income but are constrained by lack of resources.
Project to Promote Good Health Practice and HIV/AID Prevention in slum communities in Lagos
In 2010, CEADER organized a Training of Trainers on Good Health Practice and HIV/AIDS Prevention in Ijora Badia, a slum community located in Lagos mainland. The training provided important information on general health care and specifically on prevention as well as management of HIV/AIDS and other STIs infection. In addition, the training incorporated an HIV/AIDs de-stigmatization session which aimed to combat discriminatory practices against People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHAs) and encourage PLWHAs to live positively. Trainees included Sex workers and female petty traders in Ijora Badia community who have been tasked with replicating the training information within the community
